AAR Wheel Out-Of-Round Condemning Limit

Wheel Out-of-Round.Detected by wheel impact load detector reading greater than 90,000 pounds for a single wheel and verified by an AAR approved gage or other suitable device. The detector used must reliably measure peak impacts and provide a printed record of such measurements. The verified Out-of-Round run-out must exceed 0.070 inches.Wheel with condemnable slid flats are handling line responsibility and must not be billed as Out-of-Round.

APPLICATION OF OUT-OF-ROUND GAGE

  1. WHEEL SET CAUSING EXCESSIVE LOAD IDENTIFIED BY TRACK MOUNTED DETECTOR.
  2. WHEELSET REMOVED AT A REPAIR POINT.
  3. OUT-OF-ROUND GAGE (W834) APPLIED TO TREAD SO THAT THE TANGENT ARMS SPAN AN UNDAMAGED PART. SLIDE MOVED UNTIL IT IS ALSO TANGENT TO THE TREAD.
  4. GAGE MOVED TO CONTACT TREAD AT DAMAGED PART. NOTE SCALE READING AT INDICATOR AS IN FIG.4.
  5. SUBTRACT FIRST SCALE READING FROM THE SECOND. IF THE DIFFERENCE EXCEEDS 0.070 THEN THE DEPRESSION AT THE DAMAGED PART EXCEEDS 0.070, AND THE WHEEL IS CONDEMNABLE.
  6. THE PROCESS CONFIRMS THAT THE CORRECT WHEEL WAS REMOVED.
  7. THE PROCESS ALSO PROVIDES A PHYSICAL MEASUREMNENT OF A CONDEMNABLE WHEEL FOR FUTURE REFERENCE.
  8. WHEELSET SELECTION DETERMINED BY IMPACT FORCE GENERATED.
